I realized I never posted images of our finished bathroom. I rented a great 17mm lens this weekend for an architectural photoshoot. I used it to photograph the bathroom, and it is wide enough to capture a feeling of the room with the skylight. It does change perspectives some, but the feel of it is still the same.

Leo is now in his second week in Kindergarten. He really likes it and says he likes it better even than Little Bear. He likes the games and the playmobile pirates to play with. He did get a 'redirect' the second day because he was not sitting quietly in circle time. He had to go sit at his desk. This week, he had a time out! He and another boy was sent to the 3rd grade classroom to sit for a while. Leo has to work on his paying attention skills. Now it has made me paranoid about his behavior. Oh well, he will get the program soon enough. He is a little charmer and it seems like he is making lots of new friends.

Urban youth arts festival

Yesterday we went to our old stomping grounds, the skateboard park. They had a urban youth arts festival. They were giving away cans of spray paint to use on the wall they set up, and trucker hats. The trucker hats had a little stencil on it and then we could make others and use the spray paint to decorate. Leo and I collaborated on his.

the one thing I wanted to do on my birthday was take the family climbing. We walked down to the egg, on the coast near Stinson Beach. Afterward we played in the ocean then had some tacos in Sausalito.

I taught Leo how to play Uno. He is fairly good at it. Holding all the cards and picking just one card at a time requires a good bit of concentration and dexterity. I taught him yesterday, and already he is a shark! He loves the S card. That is the skip, and when it is just he and I, the skip acts like a go again card. We start with only 3 cards. That is quite enough to have a long game or a short game.

Last Saturday, we went to Glen Park Canyon and wandered around. It was great. A nice sunny day; however, we did not see any coyote, which are supposed to live there.

On the final day that Leo had off before returning to school for the new year, we went to Micky D's. There is an outdoor play structure that Leo has seen for a couple years now. He always says that we should go there. It has always been in the back of my mind weather or not we should go. Finally, Jodi took Leo on day. He loved the play structure and the happy meal. So, on this day, after 2 weeks off and having exhausting all my play options, we went to Mc Donald's. We went inside and I bought him a happy meal. I also got a burger. He ate most of the burger and saved the milk for later. I ate his fries. the happy meal came with a toy called a Bakugon. He loves that thing. After all the toys and games from Christmas it is a happy meal toy that he is most obsessed with.

Anyway, after eating we try the door to go out to the play structure and it is locked. Arrgh! They said they need a full day without rain so it is dry. Phaa.
There is a bill that passed that is "outlawing" happy meals and it is somewhat of a national joke. However, it really just says that if you are going to include a toy with a meal it has to be 'nutritious'. I whole heartedly agree now, after seeing the power of the happy meal. Leo has been asking to go back for more " you get food and a toy". How can you argue with that. If they had nutritious food, he would eat it. But, they only have a burger and fries. All they need to do is add a fruit or salad option to the happy meal and then it would be settled.

We went to Pacifica bowl with Denise, Dean and Sonny. The Kids only bowled a few rounds then played in the arcade. After bowling, we decided to go on a hike, starting with a uphill scramble through Poison Oak. Luckily, I was the only one to get it (It was mild.)

We made our Christmas stockings this year. It is funny, as the materials cost much more than buying nice ones would have been. There are lots of things wrong about that. In any case, it was fun making them. Next year, we need to make them wider, as not many toys will fit through the top!

As The rest of the country gets pummeled by snow, we are getting lots of rain. This is good for the plants and aquifers.

Christmas eve, Leo makes cookies and leaves milk out for Santa and the reindeer. First he wanted 4 cookies out, then when he found out we only had 4 cookies, he said they only need 3, leaving one left for him to eat.

As Leo slept soundly, the elves wrapped gifts and papa elf put together a bicycle.

Halloween 2010

Leo was the Wolverine for Halloween. He is so into superheros. That is pretty much all he thinks about, cept maybe chocolate. Wolverine is his favorite right now, along with Batman. Jodi and I were a little lame. I threw together a costume consisting of a blonde giant fro and knee pads that I had on that day from tiling the floor. Jodi recycled her costume from last year. Why not, she still looks good as Bat Girl. We went to Bernal Heights neighborhood and trick or treated. Leo really got what he was supposed to do this year. After about 30 min we had soo much candy. There was even a lady giving out apples and we felt comfortable enough eating them!

Friday, Moira and her dad, Leo and I went to Oakland zoo amusement park and road on lots of rides. We road the roller-coaster twice and went on the train that took us through the zoo.

The next days were hot and the city closed off the Great Highway to cars, for a few hours Sunday. We played at the beach and Leo road his big wheel down the highway too get an Iron Man Popsicle.

Sundays, the city closes off some streets in Golden Gate Park. We took Leo's big wheel and rode all around. Jodi and I had a little run just trying to keep up. Then we hiked around and explored some. Leo found a downed tree filled with rolly-pollies. What is funny to me is how a single bug ( rolly-pollies in this case) is cute and interesting, yet if there are lots of them, they are creepy!) Leo could not quite see, but the cracks of this tree were swarming with rolly-pollies

Roman turned 5 on Sunday and Leo had a present for him. He painted the paper wrapping the present and also made a card. He wrote out Happy Birthday Roman (with some instruction from us).

The present was an Ironman race car that Leo and Roman have been wanting for some time. The theme of the B-day party was pirates, as evident from Leo's hat.

The thing about spilling this cup of coffee on my laptop, was that I had already taken one sip and it was a really tasty cappuccino! I mean, I had out done myself with steaming the milk. The foam was perfectly small bubbles, the ones where the sweetness comes through. So I was lamenting the loss of this great cup of coffee and wondering what to do with the dripping computer. I decided that since the warranty was shot because it does not cover spills, I would just take it apart. It turns out it is pretty easy. After I took a hairdryer to it, everything except the keyboard is a bit sticky... That is the next thing I need to take apart.

memorial week in Vegas, final installment

memorial week in Vegas part 1

The desert was in bloom and we decided to climb "the cat in the Hat". It is the very center mountain. It looks rather small from a distance.

There were desert flowers everywhere. Very beautiful. The walk should have taken 30 minutes (says the guide). We were not going slow, yet it took us an hour. I guess I did stop for pictures.
Here is the mountain again, a little closer up; yet, still a ways off. It is in what is called the Pine creek canyon, so named because of the pine trees growing seemingly out of nothing... a dried up rocky stream bed. However, if you look hard, as you hike back into the canyon, one can find riparian pools and vegetation that seems out of place in a desert.

Here is the first pitch of 'the cat in the hat', and Jodi climbing up the to me. There was a couple just ahead of us on the route. I was afraid of that, but since we were in no hurry, I thought it fine. The couple turned out to be...well, not very knowledgeable about their situation. They held us up at every pitch; and, even when we waited for over 20 minutes, below them, out of site of them, they waited for us!!! I was shocked to climb up to pitch 3 and find that they were still there on the ledge. He did not know which way to go and was seemingly waiting there to confer with me. Holy moly! When i told him where I thought the line went, he still went around and mucked up a perfectly good pitch. After about an hour waiting, I climbed straight up the correct route. By this time, so much of the day was wasted, that Jodi and I had to turn around and not finish the last bit to the top. We are now initiating a backup plan: if there are people ahead of us on a route (and they look like hosers) we will find a different route!

Happy Mother's day 2010

I was surprised to see that Jodi was out of bed already on Mother's day. The day she could have slept in, indeed Leo (and I) slept till 9:30, she was up at her usual time.

She must have been excited for her brunch at Axis cafe, with the Hurtados.

After brunch we went to Sausalito to a friend's house boat. Our good friend Dawn had her couples baby shower and we drank margaritas on the water and smashed pinatas.

So to start off the explanation of this image, I will start with a story, go into another story, then explain the image. Two nights ago I was reading Leo the story of the Lorax by Dr Seuss. In it, the Onceler called the Lorax stupid and told him to shut up; both bad things. Leo kept confirming that saying stupid is bad and that saying shut up is bad. He asked "who said stupid?" and I would say the Onceler did, he is not very nice. And he would ask, "who said shut up?" and I would say, the Onceler did, he is sorta mean. Then He asked, "who said fuckin?" and as I was silent from trying to contain my laughter, he added, "saying fuckin is a bad word." I said yes, that is a bad word.

Today, I am at the post office to mail a package. It is a tube. I have rolled artwork in there going to an international exhibit. I had stopped by the post office last week with the tube to weigh it and get a price for it. Now, though, they say I cannot send it, that the tube is 1 " over the limit. I leave and go to the pet store to buy and algae eater for Leo's tank. I get it home and drop the bag in leo's underwear drawer and kneel on the fish when going to clean up the water! oh man.

So yesterday, Leo has his spiderman pencil in the car. He has no paper so he draws on his fingernail. when we get out of the car he shows me what he has done. Again, I am laughing!

Leo goes to Soccer on Sundays... It could be said That I go and Leo tags along sometime. He is not really into it. In fact, at the end, Coach Deejae has the kids put their hands in a circle and then raise them up shouting we love soccer. Leo always shouts: "I don't love soccer!"

I can get him to run and play some by bribing him. Ha, as if going to soccer was a chore. I guess he is still somewhat young for team activities.

He we are all mushed in the car for our trip down to Monterey. I say 'we'; but, I was doing all the driving, so I had plenty of room!

When we hit Highway 1, we stopped for a break at this quaint little ocean-side enclave. There was a gallery, and I asked Leo what his favorite art piece was and this was it... a macramé cat. It sparked a random remembrance of how my mother, sister and me did latch hook wall hangings. I must have been just older than Leo is now.

The hotel in Monterey had a heated outdoor pool that Leo loved. We had to bribe him just to get him out.

It was Grandpa Baker's birthday, so we got him some wine labels and designed this for him. He makes a chokecherry wine. It is a fruity desert wine that he has been making since I was a kid and before. He bottles it up and gives most of it away. Now he has this nifty label for it.

A quick trip down to Bakersfield for the exhibit opening, then after a nights sleep in a hotel, we traveled hwy 58 to the coast.

It was fun and Merry. Grandma and Grandpa Baker made sure there was a fresh tree in the house and presents under it. They gave Leo a cool Ironman car and his first set of Legos and a soft warm robe. Grandma Diane and Zac gave Leo some neat building block sets that click together. One builds a castle and the other a Po Po station replete with a police car and criminal! Santa made sure Leo had plenty, as well. There were cars under there and a Duplo Max, a build it yourself 18 wheeler, from the Pixar movie "cars", and some books, a meat thermometer for mommy and a sweater for dad.

Leo had a tear when we took the tree down last night. He did not want Christmas to end. He went back to school and Jodi and I went back to work.

Christmas, 2009

My plan was to stay in bed until it was light out... or at least lighter out. Leo was excited but when he got up, he crawled into our bed and actually was still for a half hour or so. Then he was moving around so much that when he asked to see if Santa came, I said ok. He crawled over me and jumped onto the floor. I hear his feet scurrying to the living room then back.... "Santa didn't know I pooped in the tub!" That made us laugh so hard and Jodi got up out of bed. You see, for the last week, Jodi and I have been using the whole "Santa is watching" bit to garner good behavior. Leo must have felt the pressure and excitement because he had a day or two of regressing toilet habits, ending on Christmas eve with a poop in the tub! So when he saw the presents under the tree naturally there was an incongruity - I said, "oh he knew. But you've been so good all year...

Anyway, my plan was to use my canon with a high ISO and natural light.. but it was so dark out I had to get the point and shoot and the battery of course died on me. I think there are some more from later on, and a video or two, so stay tuned.

Rebecca and Leo

We got a visit by the happiest baby in town, Rebecca, our friend Chris and Todd's fourth girl. They are girl making Machines. They will probably pump out a couple more girls before they are done ;o)

Rebecca was amazingly sweet, both in the evening, at night and in the morning. If you had a litter of Rebecca's it would be easy!

Chanukah Days 7 and 8 and Christmas 101

On Day seven, we received a present in the mail from Shiela, and it was time for the present from Jodi and I.

Leo and I went to get a Christmas tree on Friday afternoon. Thus ended Chanukah and started Christmas. Frosty the Snowman was on that evening; so was Frosty returns... uugh that was bad and we switched it off after the first commercial.

Gabby gave Leo some great presents for the last part of Chanukah. Leo loved his Car's character. His favorite is The King.

Chanukah Days 1, 2 & 3

Day one of Channukah, Leo heard the full story, sang a song and got his first present. It was a book called the Lady bug girl.

Day two, Leo heard more about the 8 day oil and received the second present. This time it was a wooden car racer ramp.

This toy is a big hit! We played with it all day. Thank you Nanna!

Day 3, Jodi looked up the story of Chanukah and we heard about the historic battle. Leo opened his 3rd gift.

This was a floor puzzle that was as big as he is! Nanna made sure Leo got some educational toys; this puzzle comes with a poster identifying all the ocean creatures so Leo can learn all the names.

My little daredevil is getting cooped up and finding many ways to entertain himself, and me.

His latest is the jump and twist. He reaches pretty high heights; and, even once missed his landing. I can usually get him to laugh of his owie, however.
